The Ancient Way

I’ve been reading a book about trees.

Shocker, I know 😏

I’ve been reading a chapter on modern forestry and have had to stop and reflect on all that has been revealed to me these past few years. Nature echoes truth, being that it has been crafted by the same hands that have formed you and I. It would be a travesty not to listen.

Forestry weakens the trees, which weakens the ecosystem. It’s a counterfeit version of nurturing, which stunts growth and discourages longevity. This manmade system tames and domesticates what was created to be wild, giving the trees boundaries for the sake of safety and laws under the guise of protection.

What will really save the forest? Letting it be wild. It must be allowed to grow in the ancient ways, the ways it was created to thrive. It may seem like a lack of stewardship, but it is far from it. Yielding is embedded, and so is discipline.

The trees are in constant communion with the cycles and elements of the cosmos. The river and the wind propel the forest forward in a silent devotion that sings the song of union.

And when left to original design, life is extended. Trees in modern forests cap out at 300 years. Trees in ancient forests are living past 1,000.

What is the point? We’re Mighty Oaks of Righteousness. Isaiah saw it. The man healed of blindness caught a glimpse of it – “it” being what Yahweh sees when He looks at us. He has designed something simple for us to walk in that is far bigger and greater than we could dare to dream.

Religion makes us settle, but there is something ancient within our bones that is eternally calling us back to the wild. And if we answer, this is where life truly begins.
